How to read this
The £20,000 is one allowance shared across all your ISAs, not £20,000 for each. Transferring an existing ISA from one provider to another does not use any allowance, as long as it's done as a proper transfer. A Junior ISA has its own separate allowance (£9,000 at the time of writing) and doesn't count towards yours. More in how the ISA allowance works and the ISA family explained.
How it works
How the ISA allowance works
Everyone aged 18 or over who lives in the UK has one ISA allowance a year: £20,000 at the time of writing. It’s shared across every ISA you pay into, so £8,000 in a cash ISA leaves £12,000 for everything else.
One allowance, shared
It’s £20,000 in total, not £20,000 for each account. Since April 2024 you can pay into more than one ISA of the same type in a tax year.
More in can you have more than one ISA.
Use it or lose it
The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Whatever you haven’t used by 5 April is lost; it doesn’t roll over.
Money already inside your ISAs from earlier years doesn’t count, only new money paid in this tax year.
What counts
Lifetime ISA payments count, up to £4,000 a year, but the government bonus doesn’t. A transfer between providers uses no allowance, as long as they move it for you.
A Junior ISA has its own £9,000 limit for the child and doesn’t touch yours.
Questions
Common questions
Quick answers about the figures. For your own circumstances, gov.uk and your provider have the details.
What happens if I go over £20,000?
HMRC will usually contact you or your provider and the excess may be removed, along with any growth on it. If you think you’ve paid in too much, speak to your ISA provider.
Does taking money out give me allowance back?
Only with a flexible ISA, and only within the same tax year. Flexible ISAs explained sets out how.
Is the cash ISA limit changing?
At the time of writing, the Autumn Budget 2026 kept the cash ISA limit at £20,000 for all savers over 18 from April 2027, with legislation due in November 2026. What the Budget means for your ISA has the detail.
